Canberra enforcer Neville Costigan
sent another scare through the
Raiders' camp when he pulled up
clutching his troublesome left
quadricep during a running drill
yesterday.
But the 23-year-old resumed
training just minutes later, allowing
him to continue his bid to return to
NRL football against the South
Sydney Rabbitohs on Monday night.
Costigan will see a physiotherapist
today to ensure he did no damage to
the quadricep, which he has already
torn twice this season.
If cleared he is likely to take his
place in the Raiders team on Monday
despite coach Neil Henry naming
him as 18th man.
In a further boost for the Raiders,
Costigan yesterday revealed he was
considering turning his back on a
contract with the Gold Coast Titans
to see out the final year of his
contract with Canberra.
Costigan has been widely tipped to
activate an option in his Raiders
contract to join the Titans, allowing
him to move closer to his family in
Mackay.
But he said he had a change of
heart in recent weeks and was now
considering remaining in Canberra
for at least another year.
''In the last three weeks or so I've
been thinking that I wouldn't mind
staying up here for one more year,''
Costigan said.
''I haven't really thought about it
too much but I'll probably decide in
the next three weeks or so.
''My manager is going to give me a
ring this week and I think [the Titans]
want an answer in the next two
weeks or so.
''But I don't want to rush things, I
just want to get back to playing some
football.''
If Costigan opts to remain in
Canberra it will be a huge boost for
the club, which has already lost
fullback William Zillman to the
Titans and prop Michael Weyman to
St George Illawarra.
The Raiders are also likely to miss
out on the prized signature of Trent
Barrett this week.
Costigan spoke to Henry on
Tuesday night, with the Queensland
Origin assistant coach assuring him
he would play against the Rabbitohs
if he got through the week
unscathed.
If that happens fellow back-rower
Cy Lasscock is likely to drop off the
bench, meaning he will have to wait
to make his NRL debut.
Despite yesterday's scare Costigan
was confident of playing against the
Rabbitohs.
''I just felt something go but it was
just a bit of scar tissue.
''It should be sweet.
''I kept training and I've just got to
see the physio to make sure it's all
right.''
Costigan's season hasn't started
well. After tearing his quadricep in
the pre-season he lasted less than
10minutes in round one before
sustaining the same injury.
He returned to the field for
Queensland Cup side Souths Logan
two weeks ago before pulling out of
the Raiders team that lost to the
Sydney Roosters last week after his
leg again tightened up.
