Overseas options dry up

8/08/2008 12:00:00 AM
Sacked Raiders star Todd Carney's hopes of moving to the British Super League are slim, with most clubs already fully stocked for next season, according to Salford football manager Steve Simms.

NRL chief executive David Gallop confirmed last night the league would not register Carney until at least the end of 2009, leaving him with no choice but to search overseas.

But in a blow to the 22-year-old's hopes of joining the Super League, Simms said his club was no longer interested in recruiting him.

After expressing some interest in Carney earlier this week, Simms said the newly-promoted club was now deep in negotiations with another playmaker.

''We're pretty well down the track on a halfback now so the odds of that coming off would be very slim,'' Simms said.

''Probably a week ago it might have been okay.''

In a worse sign for Carney, Simms predicted he would find it very tough to break onto any club's roster so late in the year.

He said Carney's high asking price, combined with a strict quota system for overseas players, meant he would struggle to find a club willing to take him on.

''I wouldn't imagine there's much scope for him over here.

''Most of the clubs have already got halfbacks signed.

''I don't see there's a lot of scope for halfbacks anywhere really.

''I can't think of who has got a spot for a halfback or a spot for an overseas player, plus the money that he wants.''

Gallop said the NRL would not attempt to block Carney from joining the Super League.

But he said there was no chance of him playing in the NRL next year.
